Booking & Rental Basics
How can I book a scooter?
All bookings are made directly with us by phone or WhatsApp at
+36 70 560 2301. Just message us with your preferred dates and we will confirm availability and arrange
the pick-up details. For bookings at short notice, please call us.
What is the minimum rental period?
Rentals are same-day only from 9:30 to 20:00.
Can I extend my rental?
Yes, if the scooter is available for the extra period. Please contact us via WhatsApp at least 4 hours before your original return time to request an extension.
What is your cancellation policy?
Full refund for cancellations made at least 24 hours before the rental start time. No refund for cancellations within 24 hours or for early returns.
How much does it cost?
Daily rates are 55 EUR or 20,000 HUF for 9:30 to 20:00 access. Price covers a helmet, lock, and liability insurance.
License & Eligibility
What kind of driving license do I need?
To ride our scooters, you need a valid category AM, A, or B driving license. If your license was issued in an EU/EEA country or if you have a valid international driving permit accompanying your national license, you are ready to roll!
Do you accept international driving licenses?
If you are from the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA), your driving license is fully accepted. If you are from outside the EU or EEA, we can only accept your license if it clearly indicates the eligible vehicle categories in English. To avoid any inconvenience, please check with your local authorities whether you need an International Driving Permit in Hungary, as many countries have bilateral agreements with the EU or Hungary on the mutual acceptance of driving licenses. An International Driving Permit is only valid together with your regular license.
Is there a minimum age to rent?
Yes, the minimum age to rent and ride our scooters is 18 years old. You must present a valid ID or passport along with your driving license at the time of pick-up.
I have never ridden a scooter before. Can I still rent one?
While our electric scooters are very easy to handle, for your safety and the safety of others, we require renters to have basic experience with two-wheeled motorized vehicles or at least feel very confident on a bicycle in city traffic. We will provide a brief orientation on how to operate the scooter before you start.
Can I carry a passenger?
No. Under Hungarian law, a 50 cc moped is for one rider only – you cannot carry a passenger. Riding with a passenger is an offence and the Police may stop you.
Can I drink and ride?
Absolutely not. In Hungary there is zero tolerance for alcohol while driving. If you arrive intoxicated we will not be able to hand over the scooter, and no refund will be given.
Security Deposit & Liability
Is there a security deposit?
Yes, we require a security deposit of €100. The funds are held (not charged) on your card and released after the scooter is returned in good condition. Please note: Visa holds typically last up to 5 days and other cards up to 7 days, capture or release within 3–4 days.
When do I get my deposit back?
The deposit is returned to you in full (in the same cash currency it was paid) as soon as you return the scooter, battery, and accessories in their original condition.
What is my financial liability if something happens?
Third-party liability insurance is included. However, you are responsible for damage to or loss of the scooter. If the scooter is stolen or destroyed while in your care, you must compensate Ampera Ride for the loss, up to the scooter’s market value, but not more than 1,000 EUR, provided you followed all safety rules (e.g., using the lock correctly and not leaving the key in the ignition).
Can I get collision or theft waiver insurance?
Unfortunately no. In Hungary, collision damage waiver (CDW), theft protection (THP), and personal insurance are not available for scooters. We recommend arranging Travel Insurance in your home country before your trip. The risk of theft in Budapest is low, and the scooter is fitted with an anti-theft lock.
The Scooter
How far can I go on a full charge?
Our scooter runs on two batteries. On a full charge, the two batteries together can take you up to 80 km. The actual range depends on road conditions, your riding style, and the topography (hills will use more power). Please keep an eye on the battery status indicator as you ride and plan your route accordingly.
Is there a mileage limit?
No. There is no mileage limitation. The only thing to keep in mind is the battery charge – plan your route around the available range and watch the battery indicator.
What if there is a technical problem or breakdown?
In case of a technical problem or breakdown we will do everything we can to help you as quickly as possible. Minor issues can often be solved on the spot; if not, we will provide a replacement scooter where possible. Road assistance is free within the city limits.
Riding in Budapest
Is a helmet required?
Yes. In Hungary it is compulsory to wear a helmet while riding a scooter. We provide one with every rental.
Where can I park?
In Hungary it is legal to park scooters on the sidewalk free of charge. The only rule is that you must leave at least a 1.5 m clear path for pedestrians.
Can I ride in the bicycle lanes?
No. Although many riders do it, riding a moped in a bicycle lane is not allowed. The bicycle lane is reserved for bicycles and is usually marked off on the side of the road.
Can I ride in the bus lanes?
Yes. You may use the bus lanes, which is very handy during peak hours. Bus lanes are marked with a traffic sign and the word “BUS” painted on the road. Besides buses, two-wheelers (mopeds, motorcycles, bicycles) and taxis are allowed to use them.
Can I cross the Chain Bridge?
Yes. Following its renovation, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge is permanently closed to private cars, but buses, taxis, motorcycles, mopeds, and bicycles are allowed to cross. So you can ride your scooter across the bridge – just note that private cars trying to cross may be fined, so watch for the signage and stay in the permitted lanes.
Can I ride on Margaret Island?
Margaret Island is a public park and is closed to motorized vehicles. You can, however, reach the island from Árpád Bridge on its northern side and park in the public parking area near the bridge.
Can I ride in the Castle District?
Yes, you can enter and ride in the Castle District, except for the government area on its southern side (the Prime Minister’s Office, the Presidential Palace, and the Royal Palace), which is pedestrian-only. At the entrances and exits of the Castle District you will find a barrier that you can simply pass on the way in and out.
Can I reach areas that are off-limits to tour buses?
Yes. Many areas of the city are restricted for tour buses but open to scooters – including around the Parliament Building and St Stephen’s Basilica, the Castle District, and Gellért Hill. A scooter is a great way to reach these spots.
Can I ride on motorways or expressways?
No. Our scooter is a 50 cc category electric moped, and mopeds are not permitted on motorways or expressways in Hungary. These are controlled-access, high-speed roads. Please plan your route to stay on regular city and country roads.
Is it safe to ride a scooter in Budapest?
Riding on two wheels always carries a little more risk, since you are more exposed to road and weather conditions. That said, Budapest’s traffic is generally calmer than in many other big cities, and local drivers are used to two-wheelers on the road. Ride defensively, follow the rules, and enjoy the city at your own pace.

It depends. Delivery to a hotel or the airport may be possible, but it needs to be clarified and agreed with
us in advance. Please contact us by phone or WhatsApp before your rental to discuss whether delivery to
your location can be arranged.
